Concepts to clear
"Are lions big like a big dog or small like the pictures in the book?" I asked a 5 year old child.
"Lions are big " she immediately answered me.
I was pleased.
Then I thought I would ask if lions are scary, and do they hurt humans.
"No. Lions never hurt humans. Nothing ever hurts humans other than bad people". She said it with such confidence that I did not how to reply.
"What do lions eat then? "
"They eat meat. Mutton meat."
"The maushi (zoo keeper) in the zoo cooks mutton with onions and tomatoes. The lion eats that." Apparently this 5 year old tyke did not like to eat mutton unless it was cooked with tomatoes and onions, and she presumed that lions like to eat their meat in a similar fashion.
Obviously not all 5 year old kids watch Animal Planet. Kids in urban spaces have rarely interacted with wild animals. It is a good idea to have a discussion with your child about such topics and clear confusions while reading any book with them.
