Saying No
Objective: Students get to reflect about different situations where they need to say no. They gain some skills about how to say no. They start thinking of ways of getting support from others if it is difficult to say no. Think about what is consent.
Time: 40 mins to 2 hrs depending on how much time spent in discussing with children
Materials: Video of Tea and consent
Procedure:
What tactics to others use if they don’t like the attention that they are getting from humans? E.g. rabbit, dog and babies. Run, hide, bite, call attention to others to garner support.
What can we do if we don’t want attention?
Introduce the idea that older people might be attracted to young people. It was accepted 100 years ago. Why it is not acceptable today?
Often we are shocked into silence when approached by an older person. Its OK to start ‘barking’ now to get attention. It's natural for some time to pass before reaching out for support.
How to say no. The importance of body language, voice, and eye contact. How can we maintain our friendship even if we are saying no to an activity. People are not bad. The activity that they are suggesting may be bad or might not be what you want to do right now.
Role Play: How will you say no in different situations? E.g. when asked:
People should not presume you have consented to anything simply because you have consented to it in the past. Changes in body means you change your play activities too.
Show Video: Tea and Consent Video.
Posting close-up pictures of yourself on social media can send the wrong message of what you are consenting too..
Your Profile on social media: Story from my book (The Online Persona)
Cyber bullying and suicide: Story from my book (It was Just a Joke!)
Where to report cyber crimes.
For class 9 and above : Not being able to say no, can lead to unplanned pregnancies of high school students. There are solutions for such situations.
Summary: Talk. Get help from others for any problems. Just like street dogs get help from other dogs when in trouble. Start by writing out your own problems if you feel too suffocated to talk to anyone. Reach out to friends, counselors, teachers, Principal, relatives. Ask a friend to accompany you, if you are feeling scared to go to elders. Let them know that resources are also available on my website and book.
