The Sea Breeze
The sea breeze beckons me. The sea breeze lures me. Come away, Come away, Run away, Run away from your mundane life. Run away from your dull life. Travel the seven seas with me. Come hither. Come with me. Let us merge together with the five elements and travel together. Come with me, it commands. Come with me, with the hot gust of wind, it commands. Play with me, it lures Play and come with me It lures with the cool soothing breeze. But I do not know how to come with you! I am heavy. Heavy with my family Heavy with my duties Heavy with my gravity. I can not come with you. I am too heavy. Even if I tried to come with you, Even if I tried to run with you, You would surpass me and go far ahead of me. I would never be able to catch up with you. I cannot come with you. |
Busy Shores
The sands were busy. Busy chasing each other Across the length of the beach The wind was busy. Busy chasing the sand Across the length of the beach. The leaves were busy. Busy rustling among themselves Busy chasing the wind Across the length of the beach. Only I was not busy. Not chasing anyone. Only swaying with the wind Wondering why everything around me was so busy. |
Two Beaches
2 beaches- 10 km away from each other. What is the difference?
Beach one
I heard the sea.
I heard the breeze.
I walked along the back of a huge fish.
With scales of brown, black and tan.
I walked across the black gills of the fish.
The scales glittered in the sun,
changing colours with every lap of wave that washed over it.
The gills were black and clayey.
They looked fascinating.
The water was dark and full of black silt.
We collected lots of clay and came home.
Beach two.
Kids were frolicking
Families holding hands
The sand was white.
White from numerous broken shells.
The shells that held life once upon a time
But now the pounded shells lay at the feet of these families of humans.
Families who were enthralled by the white sand
But who never noticed the lives lost
while the sea pounded the lives out of the shells to make the sand.

Gods and Goddesses
I believe that Gods and Goddesses in our lives are people. That is why most Hindu deities have a human form. Just indulge this thought of mine - will you? Now, if indeed the Gods in our lives are people, then what about the daily puja rituals we are supposed to perform for our idols. What if we, instead, perform these same rituals for people? Example: everyday, in the morning, I saw my mother bathe the idols, change their clothes, wash their dishes, bring them their favourite colour clothes, flowers and food. On different days of the week, she paid special attention to different aspects of the idols. Just imagine - if we did the same service to people instead? |
If on Mondays, we helped some elderly or sick patient to bathe. On Tuesdays, we brought the favourite flowers of a friend and gave them to her. On Wednesday, we could fast ourselves but make sure that the poor kid down the lane got his favourite food, on Thursday, we could give a facial to some loved one with milk, honey, curd, ghee, etc and on Friday, we could keep the favourite clothes of the person of choice, freshly washed and pressed and ready to use. And on Saturday, we could wash someone’s dishes. Would we get more blessings from performing these rituals on idols or on people - what do you think? Of course, it is an entirely different matter that I rarely feel motivated enough to do ANY form of puja! Perhaps this website will become my means of doing puja. |
